Full Schedule of Events
The Complexly Learn-a-thon is the time of year when the Complexly community comes together to raise funds for the ongoing production of our accessible, educational content. This year, the Complexly staff will celebrate learning with livestreams, new limited edition merch, and more!
NOTE: To attend some events, you'll need to join us in the Complexly Learner Zone!
Dear Hank & John Livestream
Every month, Hank and John hold a Patreon-only livestream to chat about what’s going on in their world. This month, it’s open to everybody!
Watch livestreamComplexly Crafting Show and Tell
Whenever the Complexly team aren't crafting awesome videos, a lot of us are just crafting! We get a kick out of seeing what we're all working on and learning about the different crafts we're all practicing, and we'd love to see what our audience is up to in your crafty time! Whether you've got a WiP to work on, a finished project you're proud of, or a brand new hobby you just need that last nudge to dive into, bring it along and spend some chill crafty time with us!
Join The DiscordEdit Audio With Me!
Sound Designer Callie Dishman walks you through her process of editing and mixing the audio for Complexly podcasts and videos, with a sample specially recorded for the Learnathon!
Watch livestreamHow To Design a Thumbnail For Clicks
Clickbait. UX. Media Psychology. Maps. We think about a lot of things when we create thumbnails for Complexly videos, and although you perhaps don’t want it to be true — these thumbnails have a big effect on what you click and watch. In this conversation, join folks from production, design, and analytics to talk about how Complexly designs thumbnails to get you to click and start learning!
Join the DiscordComplexly Octopus Craft-Along
Come hang out and craft with some Complexly folks! We’ll all be making our own version of Complexly’s unofficial mascot, the Comploctopus, in a choose-your-own-craft adventure. No specific supplies are required - use whatever materials you have on hand and interpret “octopus” however you like. You can draw, paint, sculpt, sew, knit, crochet, collage, origami, or even build one out of random stuff in your house - the list goes on. Bring your creativity (and maybe some snacks), and let’s make some cephalopods!
Join the DiscordPowerpoint party: The Hill I Would Die On
Complexly folks are highly opinionated and a lot of time is spent in meetings fiercely debating topics that cannot be proven by facts, or have any real importance to our content/the world. But this is our space to share our deeply held, silly, inconsequential beliefs such as “butt is legs” and “taco is sandwich.” Do you vehemently disagree? Let me show you some powerpoint slides that might change your mind!
Join the DiscordSciShow TTRPG
Adventure called, and valiant members of Team SciShow and Friends have answered! Tune in for a special TTRPG event featuring some of the crew behind your favorite SciShow (and Crash Course!) videos as we explore, puzzle, and fight our way through a custom one-shot. Who knows what curiosities we may encounter…?
Watch livestreamCrash Course Writing Workshop
Editorial Director Meghan Modafferi and Script Editor Annie Fillenwarth take you behind the scenes into the life cycle of a Crash Course script as it develops from a seed of an idea into a heavily-researched, edited, fact-checked, and fun-ified piece of writing. Learn how to make nonfiction writing engaging, clear, and story-oriented, and avoid common pitfalls along the way.
Watch livestreamMake Your Own Junk Journal
Join us to make a collage using materials you have at home! No craft experience necessary. To make your own junk journal, you'll need: a sturdy base (e.g. cardboard, cereal box, book cover, or journal page), some junk (e.g. recycled paper, magazines, receipts, bags, ticket stubs, stickers, greeting cards, wrappers, clothing tags, photographs, fabric scraps, ribbon, flowers, leaves), an adhesive (e.g. glue stick, craft glue, or tape), scissors, and a marker or pen.
Join the DiscordAnimating and Editing for Crash Course: a BTS tutorial
Animator Trevor Jones and editor Ellison Winterstein take you through the process of editing and animating an episode of Crash Course!
Watch livestreamScience Riff-Along
Savannah Geary and the SciShow Crew take a look at some of our educational video forebearers - in the form of sometimes goofy, sometimes cringey, sometimes insightful, and sometimes plain-old incorrect vintage public domain educational films.
Join the DiscordAsk Hank Anything Livestream
So yes, celebrities have been Asking Hank Anything all year. But what about your questions? Supporters from the Learner Zone, as well as Complexly staff, can ask Hank Anything today. Hosted by Hank and Complexly CEO Julie Walsh Smith!
