Alchemy was a weird time for science, thanks in part to the fact that everybody wrote their methods in code. The names of various chemicals were usually replaced by metaphors, called Decknamen, a German word that means “cover names.” The moon? Silver. The sun? Gold. The green lion? Aqua regia, a combination of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. Just because alchemy was science, doesn’t mean it wasn’t weird – in a beautiful, bewildering way.
