The Australian Ground Frogs in the family Myobatrachidae reproduce in incredibly weird ways. First, the Turtle Frog doesn’t have tadpoles. Its babies develop straight from egg to frog, skipping a free-living, swimming stage. Second, males of the Pouched Frog carry their tadpoles around in little pockets on their hips until they metamorphose into froglets. And third, the females of the two extinct species of Gastric Brooding Frogs literally swallowed their eggs, turned off their stomach acid somehow, and grew their tadpoles in their stomachs. They didn’t eat for the whole six weeks that this took place and after the tadpoles had metamorphosed, the mother frogs vomited them up as froglets.
