Bizarre Beasts Pin: European Eel

We humans have been weirdly obsessed with eel reproduction since the days of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. They were all strangely concerned about how eels came to be, and whether or not they had the necessary equipment for mating. Which they do, at least, some of the time. As European eels make their long, mysterious breeding journey to the Sargasso Sea from the inland and coastal waters of much of western Europe and the Mediterranean, they lose their digestive organs and grow reproductive organs. And we only got direct evidence that the Sargasso Sea is where baby eels come from within the last two years.
