The life of a fig wasp seems pretty bizarre by human standards. To lay their eggs, female fig wasps have to squeeze into the flowering body of a fig, losing their wings and antennae in the process. They never leave. The male offspring hatch first, fertilize the developing females, then dig escape tunnels…but not for themselves. They’re wingless and live their entire brief lives within that fig. The females escape through the tunnels and carry that fig’s pollen to the next fig, and the cycle begins again.
