This pin was originally released in December 2022, as a part of the Bizarre Beasts Pin Club.

New Zealand glowworms aren’t worms at all. They’re larval fungus gnats making their best attempts at being a cross between fireflies and spiders – their scientific name is even Arachnocampa luminosa, which means “bright spider-worm.” They build nests out of silk on the ceilings of caves and dangle sticky threads down to catch their prey, which they attract with their glow. They also spend most of their lives (up to a year) as predatory, spider-wannabe larvae; after they pupate into adults, they don’t eat and live for only the few days it takes to mate and lay eggs.
