This pin was originally released in November 2022, as a part of the Bizarre Beasts Pin Club.
There are at least four subspecies of bar-tailed godwits, split up by where they breed, where they migrate, and by differences in how they look. Bar-tailed godwits can be found all across the Arctic in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months, from Alaska to Siberia to Europe. They breed in the dry spots of swamps, wetlands, and river valleys across the tundra, and they feed on crustaceans, bugs, and bivalves, which they find by sticking their bills into the mud. All bar-tailed godwits fly south for the winter, but how far south they go depends on the subspecies. Some go all the way from Alaska to New Zealand!
