Great white sharks are typically considered apex predators. They sit at the top of the ocean’s food web with no natural predators of their own…mostly. There are exceptions to this rule. Like, off the coast of South Africa, a small group of orcas has been taking out great white sharks since at least 2017, seemingly specifically to eat their livers. Honestly, that’s not even the strangest thing orcas get up to. In 1987, one female in the Puget Sound area started a trend of carrying a dead salmon around. And in the summer of 2023, orcas off of the Iberian Peninsula began a campaign against boats.
