One of the weirdest things about the pea aphid is their reproductive life cycle. It goes like this: eggs are laid in the fall and just hang out during the winter. In the spring, only females hatch from those eggs and they give birth to even more females during the summer through a type of asexual reproduction called parthenogenesis.
Then, in the fall, as the days get shorter, this triggers the birth of a single generation of sexually-reproducing pea aphids (both males and females). They mate and the females lay eggs…which go on to overwinter and start the cycle again in the spring.
