Taxonomically, sea snakes are actual snakes. They’re part of the family Elapidae, which also includes coral snakes and cobras. Within that family, there are two subfamilies that evolved their ocean-going ways independently: true sea snakes (Hydrophiinae) and sea kraits (Laticaudinae). The big differences between the two groups are that true sea snakes don’t leave the water and give birth to live young, while sea kraits are more semiaquatic, leaving the sea to lay their eggs. Both groups have extremely potent venom, but aren’t interested in biting humans; their diets vary by species, but can include eels, fish, and fish eggs.
