Bizarre Beasts Pin: Tortoise

There are two different species of giant tortoises alive today, each of which includes some subspecies. The two species are the Galápagos giant tortoise (found on the archipelago of the same name) and the Aldabra giant tortoise (found on some of the Seychelles).

Both species living on islands might make you think that giant tortoises follow what’s called ‘the island rule,’ where small species on islands tend to get bigger. But it looks like that’s not the case. Instead, the giant tortoises alive today might just be the last survivors of a once almost world-wide distribution of giant tortoises!
