Trilobite Refrigerator Magnet

Did you know that the very first PBS Eons episode was about trilobites? So we think they are pretty special... and so do a lot of people. Trilobites are probably one of the most recognized fossils in the world. Their fossils can be found on every continent and even in the rocks at the top of Mount Everest!

Trilobites show up in the fossil record around 540 million years ago during the early Cambrian Period. They survived two mass extinctions, only to be taken out by the largest mass extinction of all time - The Great Dying - at the end of the Permian Period, 252 million years ago.

This magnet was modeled after Drotops megalomanicus, a trilobite found in Morocco that is around 390 million years old from the Ordovician Period. Some specimens of these trilobites can be up to 20 cm (10 in) long. They also have large, tower-like eyes with many small lenses that would have given it a nearly 360 degree field of vision.
