The Mexican mole lizard (also known as the five-toed worm lizard) is a member of the group of reptiles known as the amphisbaenians. The closest living relatives of the amphisbaenians are lizards and snakes, and while they share some features in common with both, they’re also uniquely weird. Most amphisbaenians have no legs, like snakes, but the Mexican mole lizard has front legs that it uses for digging. And, like lizards, they can drop their tails in defense, but they can’t grow them back. They live underground in burrows and can be found throughout the southern half of the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico.
