Shipworms are boring clams – they literally bore into wood, leaving it riddled with holes. They’re sometimes even called “the termites of the sea.” They scrape these burrows using their shells, the most clam-like part of their bodies. The rest looks pretty worm-y, which is where the “worm” part of “shipworm” comes from. There are around 70 species, ranging from a few centimeters to more than 1.5 meters in length. Generally, shipworms can be found in oceans and seas around the world, where they wreak havoc on any wood that comes their way. And they actually eat the wood they excavate to create the tubes they inhabit.
